A Shared Responsibility: Helping You to Help Them (2.5 hours)

This workshop addresses the idea that teaching is a “Shared Responsibility.”   It examines the difference between and IEP and a 504 Plan as well as the difference between a modification and an accommodation. Teachers will gain understanding and expertise in how to modify assignments, projects and assessments so that Mods and Accommodations are addressed with fidelity.

Activity 3: IEP Acronyms: How many do you know?

Activity 4: In Teams:   Name That Support!:  Teachers work in groups to address phrases on cards and decide whether the support is a modification or an accommodation.

How do teachers (who are not Special Ed teachers)  find a “comfort level”  in implementing Mods and Accommodations?

Does it reduce the integrity of your course?

Is it cheating?

Examine the “equity visual” for discussion

Activity 5:  Scenarios in groups: solve.   How can you modify an assignment so that the students with special needs are accommodated, and you also maintain the integrity of the lesson/activity for all students?

Activity 6:  Gallery Walk: Posters addressing modifications and accommodations and how teachers interpret them will generate discussion and assist teachers in identifying how they can successfully implement mods and accommodations.
